What to Wear for Autumn & Winter Walks in Snowdonia

There’s something special about Snowdonia once the busy summer season fades. The colours get deeper, the air feels fresher, and the walks just seem quieter and more peaceful. It’s the best time of year to wrap up warm and head outdoors, whether you’re wandering through the woods, walking along the lakes, or taking on one of the mountain trails.

We’ve been here in Betws-y-Coed since 1956, so we’re very familiar with North Wales weather. It can be four seasons in a day, and that’s why good layers, waterproofs, and comfy boots make all the difference. Here are a few things we always recommend for this time of year.

Start with the Right Layers

Layers are your best friend in autumn and winter. Start with something soft and breathable underneath, then add warmth as you go. We always love Barbour knitwear for this. It’s cosy without being too heavy, and it works perfectly under a coat or jacket.

When it’s chillier, a gilet adds a bit of extra warmth without restricting movement. It’s ideal for those days where the weather keeps changing.

Staying Warm and Dry

Anyone who’s spent time in Snowdonia knows the weather changes fast. You can set off in sunshine and be caught in drizzle ten minutes later. A proper waterproof layer is a must. Wax and quilted coats work great here, as they’re made to handle the elements and still look smart.

We’ve also got a wide selection of scarves, hats, and gloves in store to help keep the chill away. A warm hat and a good pair of gloves can make even the coldest walk feel enjoyable.

Footwear for the Season

The right footwear can make or break a walk. You don’t need to be climbing Snowdon to appreciate a good pair of waterproof boots. Insulated styles will keep your feet dry and comfortable through muddy paths and damp fields. We stock plenty of stylish yet practical boots that will last more many winters to come.

Thick socks are another must. They make all the difference when you’re out in the cold all day.

Choosing the Right Trousers

When it comes to trousers, it’s all about choosing the right pair for where you’re heading. You want something that’s comfortable, warm, and able to handle whatever North Wales throws at you.

For casual walks: If you’re sticking to the village, woodland paths, or riverside trails, go for something relaxed but durable. Barbour stretch chinos or country trousers are perfect for this – comfortable enough for all-day wear, but still smart enough to pop into a café afterwards.

For mountain hikes: When the terrain gets steeper and the weather less predictable, you’ll want trousers that can handle it. Look for water-resistant or lined styles that keep out wind and drizzle while giving you room to move. A solid pair of outdoor or walking trousers will do the job, keeping you warm, dry, and ready for whatever the trail brings.

A Backpack to Carry the Essentials

Whether it’s a short woodland loop or a full-day hike, a reliable backpack makes life easier. You’ll want something lightweight, comfortable, and water-resistant to keep your essentials dry. Our range of Roka London bags is perfect for this – durable, stylish, and built to handle North Wales weather. They’re practical enough for the trail, but smart enough for everyday use too.

Ready to Explore

There’s no better time to enjoy Snowdonia than now — crisp air, quiet trails, and the colours changing all around you. With the right layers, a good coat, and boots that can handle anything, even the chilliest days become worth stepping outside for.
